JOB SUMMARY: The AFSCME Michigan Organizing Committee is seeking an Organizing Director to create a vision and strategy for organizing workers in Michigan. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is the nation's largest public service labor union and a leader in the fight for social and economic change. AFSCME members provide the services communities depend on. AFSCME Organizing Committee 925 represents 40,000 workers throughout the state. We organize in the workplace and fight for dignity, respect, and a fair standard of living for all public service workers in Michigan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop and lead the union’s organizing and growth plans.
• Develop organizing campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff and members.
• Set and track organizing metrics.
• Generate and pursue new organizing leads.
• Design and implement internal and external trainings and events that support the organizing work.
• Supervise the recruitment and development of worker leader committees.
• Oversee the creation of all campaign materials.
• Run coalition-building efforts with other unions, student, and community allies.
• Work with staff and volunteer member organizers to develop and drive program.
• As a member of the senior leadership team help set the goals and agenda for the union.
• Represent AFSCME with media, politicians, and allies.
• Mobilize members to participate in statewide events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
• At least ten years of successful union organizing experience and ability to create and move a campaign plan.
• Success in supervising and mentoring staff.
• Demonstrated success in running and winning organizing campaigns.
• Ability to use social media and virtual platforms to support membership campaigns.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and members.
• Commitment to racial equity and social justice.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research and gather information for negotiations, strategy development and other organizing activities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends. Some travel required.
• Must at all times possess a valid driver’s license, suitable transportation, and provide proof of insurance at mandated levels.

• Must be able to work at desk/computer for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.

• May be required to reach, bend, stoop, and handle objects with hands and/or fingers, talk and/or hear, and see.
• Position requires light to moderate work with 20 (twenty) pounds maximum weight to lift and carry.
