AFSCME members are workers just like you, employed by cities, states, counties, hospitals, the federal government and non-profit agencies, and other private employers across the United States. Chartered in 1936, AFSCME has 1.3 million members. AFSCME is:
The largest union of secretarial and clerical workers with over 200,000 members.
The largest union of social workers with over 100,000 members.
The largest union of correction officers—75,000 call AFSCME their union.
The representative choice for over 325,000 health care and hospital workers and over 100,000 school employees.
The largest union of highway employees, mental health workers, inspectors, employment counselors, park and recreation workers, and many other occupations.
Michigan AFSCME Council 25 is some 90,000 plus members strong!
Despite the vast diversity of its membership, workers of virtually all public service occupations (as well as private sector and non-profit workers) can be assured they will find a specialized voice for their needs within AFSCME.
THE MEMBERS RUN THE UNION!
A truly democratic union, AFSCME is run by its members. Every member has a vote in the election of local union officers and board members. Each local has its own constitution and members vote at meetings to determine policy, activities, and local dues structure. Members also vote on contract approval or rejection. These rights are guaranteed by the International Union Constitution and the Bill of Rights for Members.
